CSCA past papers: what exists, what is reliable, what to practise
Past papers are the fastest way to learn how CSCA asks questions. They are also the easiest place to pick up a wrong method from a badly written answer key, so it is worth knowing what you are looking at.
CSCA does not publicly release its live exam papers. What circulates online is a mix of official sample questions, reconstructed papers rebuilt from candidate recall after each sitting, and third-party mock papers. Reconstructed papers are genuinely useful for question style and pacing, but their answer keys vary in quality and should always be checked.
Three things people call a “past paper”
| Type | What it actually is | How much to trust it |
|---|---|---|
| Official sample questions | A small set of questions published by the assessment authority to illustrate format and difficulty. | Highest. Few in number, so they run out quickly. |
| Reconstructed papers | A sitting rebuilt from candidates’ recall afterwards, then written up with a worked answer key. | Useful for style, pacing and topic coverage. Quality depends entirely on who reconstructed it. |
| Third-party mocks | New questions written to match the published syllabus, sold or given away by tutors and platforms. | Fine for drilling topics. Not evidence of what the real paper asks. |
Any page describing itself as “official past papers” for a live sitting is describing a reconstruction, whether or not it says so.
How to actually use them
Sit one paper under real timing before you study anything
A cold, timed attempt tells you which topics are weak and how far off the pace you are. Studying first and testing later hides both.
Mark the method, not just the answer
Multiple-choice papers reward the right answer reached the wrong way, and that method then fails on the next question. Compare your working line by line against the solution.
Work in both languages if your programme is Chinese-taught
The mathematics is the same; the wording is not. Reading a question in Chinese under time pressure is a separate skill from solving it, and it is where most of the lost marks are.
Repeat sittings, do not repeat papers
Once you have seen a paper you are recalling answers rather than solving problems. Keep at least one unseen paper for a full rehearsal close to your sitting date.
How to check an answer key before you trust it
- Does the key show working, or just a letter? A bare letter cannot be verified and cannot be learned from.
- Does the stated answer actually satisfy the question when you substitute it back in?
- Is the topic on the published syllabus? Out-of-syllabus questions usually mean the paper was padded with material from another exam.
- Are the Chinese and English versions of the same question actually asking the same thing? Mistranslated questions are common in free bundles.
- Do question numbers, mark totals and the time limit match the format described by the official source?
- If two sources disagree on the same question, solve it yourself before believing either.
The full collection
The sample above is one paper. The complete collection covers Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Science Chinese and Humanities Chinese, with the question paper, answer key and a worked explanation for every question, in both Chinese and English, in a single searchable file.
Every solution is worked and checked rather than reduced to an answer letter, which is the specific failure mode of the free bundles circulating on document-sharing sites.
Verify before you rely on any of this
Practice material tells you how to prepare. It does not tell you what you are required to sit. Confirm your subject combination, language version and score deadline on csca.cn and with each university’s current international admissions notice.
Reconstructed papers are study aids compiled from candidate recall and mapped to the published syllabus. They are not official examination documents and are not endorsed by the assessment authority.
